Redneck Debutante Hippie Chick with Shannon Noel

Have-To vs Choose-To

Shannon at Shannon Noel Coaching Season 1 Episode 3

That exhausted sigh when you look at your to-do list isn't just about being busy—it's about feeling powerless. We've all fallen into the trap of seeing our responsibilities as punishments rather than choices. "I have to do the laundry." "I have to answer all these emails." "I have to drive the kids everywhere." But what if we're approaching our obligations all wrong?

This episode flips your to-do list on its witchy little head by challenging you to examine what's really behind those "have-tos." Using the example of driving kids to activities, we explore how many tasks we frame as obligations are actually choices we're making based on deeper values—safety, connection, creating opportunities for our loved ones. The language shift from "have to" to "choose to" isn't just semantic; it's transformative.

When you recognize that you're actually choosing most of your responsibilities (even the difficult ones), you reclaim your power. You transform from a victim of circumstance to the intentional creator of your experience. And for those genuine obligations that truly don't align with your wants? You give yourself permission to reevaluate them, delegate them, or simply say no.

This mindset shift won't magically make your life less busy, but it will fundamentally change your experience of that busyness. You are the divine creator of your own universe, the enchantress of infinite possibilities. Ready to take your power back—one choice, one breath at a time? Speaker 1:

Ever hear yourself go ugh. I have so many things that I have to do. I have to do the laundry, I have to pick up the kids, I have to answer all these emails, like it's some kind of punishment. But what if some of those have-tos are actually want-tos in disguise? Today, we're flipping your to-do list on its witchy little head, because this is your life and you deserve to live it with intention, not obligation.

Speaker 1:

Speaker 1:

Do you find yourself overwhelmed with a continuous to-do list with 1 million things that you just have to do? But wait a minute. Do you have to do them? Or do you actually somewhere deep down, maybe way deep down, want to do that thing? Here's an example I have to drive my kids all over town today. Do you? Do you really have to? Could you call Hop, skip, drive or Uber or Lyft and arrange a pickup? Could you enlist the help of a neighbor, a friend? Could you say no to whatever activity it is that you're driving them to?

Speaker 1:

Probably you could probably do one of the above, but most likely you don't want to because really deep down again, maybe way deep down, you actually want to drive them because, well, I don't know maybe you want to make sure they get there safely yourself. Maybe you want them to be doing whatever activity it is because you know it will help them in their future, or because it's fun. Maybe you want to listen to a podcast while you're driving them or waiting for them fun. Maybe you want to listen to a podcast while you're driving them or waiting for them. Maybe you like having them captive in your car for a while so you can actually have a conversation with them. Maybe these are the last few months you will be driving them around before they get their own license. I don't know, but you know.

Speaker 1:

So really think about it and then ask yourself why am I doing this thing? When you find the answer, under all the overwhelm, you may just be surprised. You may find that you actually want to do that thing and if not, then guess what? You can choose to remove it from your list. Seriously, you do get to choose, and this isn't about pretending you're thrilled to do every little thing. It's about taking your power back. One drive, one choice, one breath at a time. It's have to versus choose to. It's a huge difference and it can be tricky. I feel you and also this can be life changing. Try it, by the way, I can help you with discerning between those have-tos and the want-tos.
